A teenage author from Peterborough has had his first novel published and is set to sign copies in the city.
We love celebrating local talent and as we’re supporting the Peterborough Celebrates Year of Reading campaign we definitely want to tell you about 18-year-old Daniel Evans.
The teenager who works at the city’s WHSmith store will be stepping away from the tills on Saturday June 22 to instead take centre stage signing copies of his first ever book – The Survivors.
Daniel told ESP – “The signing taking place at WHSmith has added to my nerves as this is my place of work. I am eagerly looking forward to it – the opportunity to meet readers who firstly may have similar interests to myself in a particular genre of book, but secondly readers of different genres that may be interested in my book as well.
“It is quite surreal to meet with people that have bought and read THE SURVIVORS and to give their feedback on it. The surrealism comes because I remember the first time this book came to mind and the main character began to take shape. Now the book is in print and has been sold and read by members of the public.”
The Survivors (published by Pegasus Elliot Mackenzie Publishers LTD), tells the story of sixteen-year-old Xander. He lives in a crumbling building in an Estate with a small group of others. As far as they know, they’re the only survivors. Xander and his best friend Vicky are Scavengers – they must do this simply to stay alive in the unforgiving heat and the bleak landscape.
Daniel explained more about the book to ESP – “To give a brief overview of the book, it is written in a dystopian point of view. It introduces Xander, my main character, along with his best friend who embark on a perilous journey across the desert to the Wastelands.”
Described as wearing a hoodie in the summer and an even bigger hoodie in the winter this Peterborough teenager is usually found with his nose stuck in a book and the same playlist playing on repeat in his earphones. It was while he was recovering from an illness that this book fan turned author with the spark of an idea for a story.
“That evening, I wrote down the first few paragraphs that eventually ended up being the first chapter,” explained Daniel. “I was writing the book while I was sixteen in Year 10, juggling both revisions for my exams and writing the first draft of my book. I decided to send the book out to publishers after I finished school.”
