They’re ready to invade Peterborough – 350 Vikings are about to descend on Flag Fen Archaeology Park this early May Bank Holiday weekend.
If you’re planning your days out get ready for the return of this local attraction's biggest and most spectacular event of the year – Viking Festival 2026! We went along last year and can recommend it.
Jacqueline Mooney, General Manager at Flag Fen, said –“Viking Festival is always one of the highlights of our year at Flag Fen. Seeing hundreds of Viking re-enactors bring history to life in such an immersive and engaging way is truly spectacular. We’re particularly excited about the range of visitor participation activities this year, especially for children, making it a fantastic day out for families to learn, play and experience the Viking world together."
This action-packed, living history event invites you to step back in time and experience the sights, sounds and drama of the Viking world. From authentic encampments and hands-on activities to epic battle re-enactments, the festival is an unforgettable day out for families, history enthusiasts and first-time visitors alike.
You can enjoy weapons demonstrations, archery displays and even have a go at archery yourself. Axe throwing will also be available for those wanting to test their Viking strength (small additional charge applies).

There’s plenty for younger visitors to enjoy too, with a range of child friendly activities. Children can explore a Viking grave, enjoy dedicated storytelling sessions, and even take part in a children’s battle experience (aged 5 – 12), perfect for budding young warriors.
The highlight of each day will be the dramatic re-enactment of The Battle of the Holme, fought in East Anglia on 13 December 902 between the Anglo-Saxon men of Wessex and Kent and the Danelaw forces. Watch as skilled re-enactors charge into battle, swords flashing and shields clashing, recreating the intensity of early medieval warfare.

Walking through the bustling Viking camp is a great experience where you can discover what life was really like over 1,000 years ago. Learn about Viking food, crafts and daily life, and see traditional woodworking, metalworking, cooking and weaving live in action. It’s fascinating and the re-enactors are all too happy to tell you more.

Paul Murphy, From Ousekjarr Viking Group, says – “Flag Fen has become one of the highlights of our year, and our group members have to be quick to book a place for the event as there is such a high level of demand to attend.
"The site is steeped in history and we always have a great event with an excellent crowd watching our battles and joining in with our activities. Visitors ask great questions and have a real interest, and we love to see them returning again and again each year. We love showing what we can do, and it’s great to see the audience enjoying it so much.”
The festival runs from 10am each day.
