The Peterborough Celebrates campaign has whipped up a real, palpable buzz about the 900th birthday of our prestigious cathedral, and what better way to commence it than the annual festival celebrating its most famous resident, Katharine of Aragon.
The three day event aims to bring to life the story of Katharine, from her Spanish roots to her marriage with Henry VIII, all the way to her burial in Peterborough in 1536.
The celebration will also utilise the powers of music, dancing and literature to create a bridge between English and Spanish cultures.
The popular festival, organised by Peterborough Cathedral and Vivacity, takes place between January 25 – 28, and as ever crams in numerous events to entertain all, from young to old, and newcomers to history nerds.

January 26
Tudor Style Pottage & Ale Supper
Gather up your friends and family and treat them to a Tudor-style supper in the atmospheric Grade I listed Knights Chambers at the cathedral. Tickets are priced at £48 and sell quickly, but do include a free drink. Call 01733 452336 or book online at the cathedral’s website.
Anne Boleyn, A King’s Obsession
Join bestselling historian and novelist Alison Weir, as she sheds light on the life of Katherine of Aragon’s former lady in waiting and rival for the King’s affection, Anne Boleyn. Tickets are £12 for adults and are available online or on 01733 452336
Tudor Peterborough Walk
Roam through the city of Peterborough with a costumed guide, who’ll tell you all about the city 500 years ago in the times of Katharine of Aragon, before finishing in the cathedral where you’ll hear about her funeral. There’s another walk on Sunday January 28 as well, also starting at 2pm. Meet at the museum.
January 27
Old Scarlett Tours
‘Old Scarlett the Tudor Gravedigger’ who lived to be 98 and buried both Katharine of Aragon and Mary, Queen of Scots leads this family friendly tour around the cathedral. It’s certain to be a fun tour from a very unique perspective. There are three different tours across the day and tickets are £4 for adults and £3 for children, which come with a free copy of ‘Monks, Mischief and Marauders’ activity book.
January 27 and 28
At Home with the Tudors
Meet the Barber Surgeon and face his gruesome cures, mind your manners around a Tudor lady and bear arms with soldiers who’ll show you how to fight.
