If the thrilling events on the water at the Rio Olympics have given you a taste for rowing, why not catch some local action at Peterborough Rowing Lake?
While Britain’s Olympians battle it out for gold medals in Rio, Peterborough’s rowing community will be striving for ‘pots’ (pewter tankards) at their local regatta this weekend August 13 – 14. The Peterborough Summer Regatta attracts rowers from all over the country, with over seven hundred competitors expected to attend on each day.

It’s an exciting day for competitors and spectators alike. Races take place at Thorpe Meadows on one of only four purpose-built rowing lakes in the country. In contrast to other local regattas where two crews enter each heat, the lake allows up to four crews to compete at once.
Saturday’s races use the 1000m length of the lake for more tactical competition where good technique can beat stronger crews. Sunday’s 500m sprints favour faster starts and raw power. Races are likely to be close on both days!
Racing starts at around 9am and finishes around 6pm with races taking place every three to four minutes. If the racing gets too exhausting, the club house has a licensed bar with real ales. For earlier spectators, tea, coffee and a selection of home-made cakes can be bought from the boat house.
It might be too late for Rio, but who knows? With former Peterborough rowers already in the GB squad, perhaps you’ll see one of Tokyo’s stars in action…
