NO HORSING AROUND FOR BLUE WATCH!

Fire fighters from Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue have visited Sacrewell Farm  to further their animal knowledge!

About 10 fire fighters from Dogsthorpe Station Blue Watch have been to the Farm twice now to associate themselves with working with animals.

The aim of the exercise was to give them practice in handling large animals-and they don’t come much bigger than their Shire Horses!

The crew practised putting a harness on young Shires Edward and Stanley who were more interested in the mints the fire fighters had hidden in their pockets.

General Manager at Sacrewell Farm Mike Rooney said: “I think it’s a great idea that they are practicing handling the animals.

“We had an incident here at the Farm a couple of years ago when a Shire Horse got stuck in a ditch and we had to call the fire brigade to help get it out. The more practice they get the better – you never know when you’re going to need it!”

The crew always carry harnesses as part of their kit just in case they get called out to an equestrian or agricultural emergency.

Mr Rooney added: “We look forward to working with Dogsthorpe Fire fighters again in the future – we just hope it’s not in an emergency!”
