Was your New Year’s resolution to try new things? Then why not pop along to Vivacity’s Roman Mosaics workshops, ideal for crafty types, history buffs, or anyone looking for a fun and artistic day out this February.

Head to Flag Fen Archaeology Park to learn how to create mosaics in your own designs, producing your own set of six mosaic coasters to take home at the end of each session – a guaranteed talking point next time you have a cup of tea!

The workshops will be held by tutor Lawrence Payne, who trained at the renowned Scuola Arte del Mosaico in Raenna, Italy. There are two sessions on offer, the first teaching participants how to cut marble pieces and design Opus Sectile mosaics. Opus Sectile mosaics use big pieces, rather than small squares, to make designs and patterns.

If you prefer the more classic Roman mosaics, the afternoon session offers the chance to cut small tiles (known as tesserae) and create traditional designs. There will be the chance to pick up the same tools used by ancient craftsmen, look at Roman examples for inspiration, and if coasters aren’t to your fancy, in this session you’ll be given the opportunity to create a small picture instead.

Laura Hancock, Heritage Events Officer, said – “Lawrence is well-known for his workshops and in these sessions he’ll teach you everything you need to know to create stunning designs. I love the ideas of having unique mosaic coasters in your living room that you made yourself!”

Both sessions will be held on Saturday February 2. The Opus Sectile Mosaics workshop will run from 10am-12 noon and costs £27 per person, while the Classic Mosaics workshop runs 1-4pm, costing £45 per person. All materials will be provided.
