It turns out, they DO make them like they used to.
I love those 1970s farces that Woody Allen used to make. Peter Bogdanovich (writer/director) has provided us with something not quite as brilliant – but certainly something similar.
She’s Funny That Way tells the story of Arnold, a married Broadway director (Owen Wilson) who goes all ‘Pretty Woman’ on a call girl (Imogen Poots) and pays her $30,000 to quit her job and turn her life around. She decides to fulfill her dream of becoming an actress – and coincidently lands herself a part in Arnold’s latest play.
The coincidences continue. The call girl is seeing an angry therapist (Jennifer Aniston) who is dating the writer on Arnold’s play (Will Forte) and also treating a Judge (Austin Pendleton) who is obsessed with the call girl. The connections continue but I fear I’ve confused you enough as it is.
The characters’ lives begin to overlap in humorous ways – like something you’d see in classic comedies by directors such as Ernst Lubitsch, Leo McCareyand Mitchell Leisen.
The coincidences become a little tiresome towards the end. Literally everybody is connected in some way, and with every new connection revealed, it becomes more unrealistic. If you can switch off your brain and just go with it, you’ll get much more out of your viewing experience.
Unfortunately, this quirky comedy has been overshadowed by the big summer blockbusters and is only around this week. Go see it before it’s too late – especially if you’re one of those that say, “They don’t make comedies like they used to.”
