Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel in a movie called ‘Sex Tape’ would seem like a dream come true for both the ladies and the gents!
Unfortunately, the lack of any good nudity is as disappointing as the lack of good jokes.
After the pair appeared together in the hit comedy Bad Teacher, I had high hopes for this flick – as they seemed to have a history of good onscreen chemistry. Unfortunately, this script didn’t give either actor the chance to make that happen here.
Diaz and Segel play the all too familiar couple, where the raw excitement of the early stages of the relationship has well and truly gone. So, they decide to spice things up a bit by making a sex tape, with disastrous results as it ends up being digitally synced to a number of family, friends and bosses!
The latter half of the movie focuses on their sometimes farcical attempts to wipe the tape from everyone’s possession. I’m the first to admit I don’t mind a bit of silly humour (Anchorman, anyone?) but these jokes don’t quite hit the mark in what becomes a long and drawn out second part of the film.
So are there any redeeming features? If you’re a fan of Diaz or Segel, don’t get me wrong, the movie is watchable. They 100% commit to their roles and perform with high energy and excitement. Fans of Rob Lowe will also like his appearance as Diaz’s boss – a definite highlight in the plot.
Overall, this is a missed opportunity. A barley mediocre film which had the potential to be a big hit.
