David O Russell reunites with Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro and Bradley Cooper for this comedy-tinted drama.
Russell is the man responsible for Silver Linings Playbook, one of my favourite films from the last decade – and notched Lawrence an Oscar.
His follow up, American Hustle, was an enjoyable watch, but in comparison to its predecessor it left me slightly underwhelmed.
So here’s the writer/director’s latest film for your consideration as we approach the awards season.
Based on a true story, Joy Mangano (Lawrence) had a dream… about a mop. Not just any mop, but a revolutionary super-absorbent mop that can ring itself out. Following an appearance on shopping channel QVC, Mangano sold thousands of her invention, starting an empire that boasted more than $150million every year.
The good news is that there is more to this plot than a mop. The story’s a heart-warming tale of a Cinderella-esque woman who spends four decades fighting her way out of the shadow of the many male figures that stood in her way.
Her father (De Niro) doesn’t believe in her – not many people do. This is a story for anyone who’s wanted to prove their doubters wrong.
The bad news is that O Russell stretches the film as far as it’ll go. Twenty minutes could easily have been cut out of the running time, putting this about on a par with American Hustle.
But it’s not quite in the same league as Silver Linings Playbook.
