A half-baked American Pie

Blockers has been a hot topic for a while now. Ever since the red band trailer (where John Cena funnels beer into his rectum) hit the internet, people have been going crazy for what looked like the next American Pie. Having now seen it, I’m pleased to say there are indeed many similarities to the much loved 1999 comedy.

Much like in American Pie, this directorial debut of Kay Cannon (the writer of the Pitch Perfect series) tells the story of high school friends – Julie (Kathryn Newton), Kayla (Geraldine Viswanathan) and Sam (Gideon Adlon) – who all vow to lose their virginity on prom night.

The problem is, their parents become aware of the pact and therefore launch a covert one-night operation to stop the them from sealing the deal. Said parents consist of a single mother Leslie Mann (The Other Woman, This Is 40), a surprisingly sensitive John Cena (Trainwreck, Sisters) and a divorced screw-up Ike Barinholtz (Neighbours, Suicide Squad). Their journey to find their kids sees them in often hilarious situations.

As promised, Blockers does contain the raunchy humour as seen in American Pie (last reference, I promise), though I must warn you – it’s not until half way through the movie that this type of comedy kicks in. It’s almost as if the film wasn’t sure what type of film it wanted to be until midway, and with five credited screenwriters under its belt, that may have been the case.

What’s most refreshing (and makes it stand out from many other films in the genre) is that this is refreshingly very sex-positive. The teenage girls are strong and the teenage boys aren’t sex-pests.

Overall, with Blockers being sweet and family friendly one moment, then raunchy and controversial the next, the result is a mixed bag. Nonetheless, the good in this movie certainly outweighs the bad – with many moments having me laughing out loud.
