CALLS TO SAVE OUR BROADWAY THEATRE!

A petition to help save the Broadway Theatre from being converted into flats and remain an entertainment venue has now reached over 1,700 signatures eclipsing the theatre’s current 1,200 capacity.

The online petition set up by Barry Warne, a respected member of the Nene Valley Harriers is being sent to Peterborough City Council’s planning office in time for the December 15 deadline. (The date people have to register their opposition to the flat conversion planning application.)

You can view the Broadway Theatre planning application through this link and should you wish to object to it, you can do so here:

Local man Barry Warne is campaigning to keep it as a theatre and told ESP – “The deadline for opposing planning permission is only a few days away, so if the Broadway Theatre is important to you then now’s the time to show your support.”

The building has had a chequered history over the last few years and has not been in full time operation as a theatre for some time despite two successful runs by producer Bill Kenwright. Owner Rinaldo Fasulo has had the building on the market for several years but has now proposed plans to convert it into luxury flats.

Opposition to the planning application has seen Peterborough Civic Society and the Theatres Trust send detailed correspondence to Peterborough City Council over the past week setting out their objections to the application and offering what they believe is a viable long term solution to keeping the Broadway Theatre as an entertainment venue.

The Theatres Trust is the national advisory public body for theatres which was established through the Theatres Trust Act 1976 ‘to promote the better protection of theatres’. It is also backing the city council resolution to put a preservation order on the building which originally opened in 1937.
