Get ready for a weekend of great tunes as Peterborough Folk Rootz gets the good vibes flowing at Charters!
Here at ESP we’re delighted to see the much-loved Randall Rootz team are back and have merged with the Peterborough Folk Festival to revive the historic Peterborough Folk Rootz Festival.
The free family-friendly festival (that’s a mouthful), takes place outside at Charters garden on the town bridge over the weekend of August 17th/18th and a jam-packed line-up of bands has been announced, with 20+ acts scheduled to perform over the weekend and musicians hailing from as far afield as the West Indies, France and Ukraine.
“As well as traditional and modern folk singer/songwriters, such as Mark Roberts, Lisa Ambrose, Andy Whittle and Gren Bartley, the festival will also feature some more obscure acts”, explained festival organiser Mike Harris.
“Celtic-fusion act Aartwork, French folk/cabaret singer Cleo T, as well as Muha from Eastern Europe and an amazing Afro/Flamenco fusion act in the form of Randolph Matthews & Byron Johnston have also been confirmed.”
Other acts include local favourites, Opaque (Acoustic), The Deltaphonics (Folk/Pop) Lexie Green (Blues/Rock), The Malingerers (Old Time Country pictured above), The Claddagh Band (Traditional Irish), Pennyless (Folk), Laurette Evelyn & Chris Watson (Folk/Jazz), Shake Hands Eric (Folk/Blues) and Pogues tribute band, The Dead Rabbits, as well as The Lesley Curtis Band (Folk/Rock) and Quest (Acoustic/Folk) – proving once again that the local music scene is full of talent and very healthy.
The original Peterborough Folk Rootz Festival was established in 1999 by Peterborough musician, Mark Randall, who brought a plethora of Folk and World Music artists to a culturally developing Peterborough. After Mark’s untimely passing in 2007, the Randall Rootz Festival was launched by his close friends and family – originally as a one-off memorial event – to raise funds and support for Sue Ryder Care at Thorpe Hall Hospice and to keep the spirit of Mark’s love for music alive by continuing to bring a range of diverse music to the city. The last Randall Rootz Festival was in 2010 – although a number of ongoing ‘Randall Rootz presents’ events still continue to this day.
In keeping with Mark’s passion for music, community and diversity, the festival ethos strives to put on an event that incorporates these ideas, while also helping to raise awareness and much needed funds for Sue Ryder’s Thorpe Hall Hospice, where Mark was cared for in his final weeks. As well as the diverse range of live acts, the festival will also include performance poetry and a variety of family-entertainment, including face-painting for children of all ages.
