All hail the independents; it’s time for some vinyl takeover in Peterborough for Record Store Day!
Many moons ago, music lovers had a choice of record stores to browse and purchase their carefully selected tunes within, but sadly numbers have fallen since those golden years of small business. Yet it’s not all bad news. In Peterborough, one man and his shop is putting independent record stores firmly back on the music map. Marrs Plectrum Records (387 Fullbridge Road), is a haven for vinyl lovers and as Matt Hawton, the owner of this treasure trove puts it, “We sell music, not data.”
Marrs Plectrum Records buy and sell records worldwide and I think it’s safe to say that Matt has catered for almost every music taste. Genres such as rock, new wave, indie, jazz, blues, folk (you get it yet?) can be found in Matt’s musical haven, and it doesn’t end there. Now Marrs Plectrum Records can take great pride in being the first record store in Peterborough to take part in Record Store Day.
Record Store Day is a one day global event where special vinyl releases are made available for sale. It first started in 2007 when over 700 independent stores in the USA came together to celebrate their unique culture. It wasn’t long until the UK jumped on board and this year is the UK’s eighth anniversary. Taking place on April 18, festivities include performances, meet & greets with artists and DJs, in store quizzes and other cool fun stuff.
Matt tells ESP: “Record Store Day has become hugely popular and important to music fans. On the day, exclusive and limited edition records and CDs will be released and available only to independent shops.
“People have fallen back in love with vinyl. There’s a passion for records that CDs and MP3 never captured. Every day is Record Store Day here.”
