TRAVEL CHALLENGE TO LEAVE THE CAR AT HOME

We’re being challenged to leave our cars at home for a week and use public transport to get around the city…and there’s the chance to win prizes!

Councillor Lucia Serluca, Cabinet Member for City Centre Management, Culture and Tourism for Peterborough City Council, is giving public transport a go and the car a rest, hopefully saving time and money as a result.

Promoting the council’s Public Transport Week, part of the Travelchoice campaign, Councillor Serluca hopes to demonstrate how many journeys can be made using the bus and train and how often we could leave our cars at home.

Councillor Serluca will keep a travel diary of her progress, tweeting highlights throughout the week using the @PeterboroughCC twitter account.

Whilst following the day-to-day journeys of Councillor Serluca, the council is also organising a range of events to encourage use of public transport and raise awareness of the services on offer throughout the city.

On Tuesday August 19 commuters and shoppers are invited to take part in the Deal or No Deal public transport giveaway. Prizes on offer include free tablet computers, bikes, Nike fuel bands and bus tickets and can be won between 12pm and 4pm at the Queensgate Shopping Centre. Anybody with a valid public transport travel ticket for Tuesday can join in.

On Wednesday August 20 local business people can attend a Business Bus Day to learn more about commuting and receive free dayrider and megarider tickets for use throughout the city.

On Saturday August 23 Railworld and Nene Valley Railway are opening their doors free of charge to anybody that wants to visit by public transport. Simply show your valid ticket to enjoy all the facilities and events on offer. Any cyclist that takes their bike along can also have it security marked for free.

Councillor Serluca said: “I’m looking forward to demonstrating how easy it is to get around Peterborough by public transport and don’t think it should pose too much of a challenge.
