THE POSH PAGE – HONOUR FOR LOCAL LEGEND TOMMY

ESP’s Posh Page columnist Phil Adlam might not have news from the pitch as the footy is suspended, but it’s time to focus on other news from the club…

Well, these are certainly unprecedented times. My usual monthly column in the magazine is about football and how Peterborough United are doing in their promotion push, but for obvious reasons that is not the case.

The professional game has been suspended but that doesn’t mean there isn’t any news coming out of PE2. We are making great strides when it comes to the stadium with conversations ongoing about concluding the purchase of London Road, whilst plans are afoot for a new 17,500 stadium, which you will have read about I am sure.

In other news, Tommy Robson has been recommended for the Freedom of the City and I can’t think of a more deserving recipient than he.

Tommy is Mr Peterborough United. The record appearance holder on the pitch, off it, he is a wonderful ambassador, working on match days with our valued sponsors to ensure they have a fantastic time at the Weston Homes Stadium.

He is fighting MND in typical Tommy fashion, with a smile on his face. I have worked at the club a long time and he’s always been friendly, accommodating and keen to share his stories and it was a real shame that we had to postpone an event with him and his good friend Jack Carmichael, who would have entertained over a hundred senior citizens with tales from the past.

The community of Peterborough has come together to support him too. We held an event earlier this year in his honour with former players in attendance and the Yellow Block Podcast are hoping to hold a five a side tournament at a future date, with all profits donated to Tommy.

So what do you do without football? Delve into the archives? Play tic-tac-toe on Twitter like some football clubs did last month? At the end of the day, as frustrating as it is at present, health always comes first and I hope the readers of ESP continue to be healthy and look after one another.

Phil will be keeping us up to date with regular news from the club over the coming weeks so keep checking in here for all the latest.
