Joseph has come to Peterborough’s Broadway Theatre to show off his coat of many colours.
Originally written by Andrew Lloyd Webber, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat is retold through song and dance by Narrator, Jennifer Potts, who delivers this bible story with great success. She introduces the story by singing to two children dressed in their bed robes before tretaing us to the well-known classic ‘Any Dream Will Do.’
We learn early in the show that Joseph (played by Ross Lee-Fowkes) is the favourite of Jacob’s twelve sons, which causes extreme bitterness and jealousy to set in. Joseph is then sold for silver coins and his father is made to believe he’s been killed.
For those of you who’ve seen this theatrical production before, you’ll know there are some fantastic familiar songs for you to sing along to, some of which are fast paced and others that are slower. The orchestra was very good but unfortunately for me the slow songs seemed too slow and this lengthened the production. The lighting though really set the atmosphere and the strobe lighting effect added extra excitement to the show.
One thing that disappointed me a little was the use of the children’s choir on stage. Whilst they sang beautifully, there was some confusion as to what part they played within the performance as they mainly just sat on the set.
Ross Lee-Fowkes as Joseph, who’s just marked his professional debut before joining the cast for a new UK tour in 2014, was certainly a hit with the crowd and gave a great performance. He treated the first night’s audience to a festive Christmas number performing ‘White Christmas’ and as a result, the audience gave him and the cast a well deserved standing ovation.
I would certainly recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good musical and likes to see an old musical modernised. It was very child friendly if you’d like a family night out and there were several moments of great comedy.
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat runs at The Broadway until Saturday January 4 so don’t miss it!
