KATANA IS THE HOT VENUE TO TRY

If you're looking for somewhere super stylish that serves delicious food with plenty of theatre, Katana on Broadway in Peterborough has it all with its talented Teppanyaki chefs ready to wow you with their fiery skills! Throughout July you can also make the most of a special ESP offer with a FREE bottle of Prosecco with your dinner reservation or a glass with your lunch from Sunday to Thursday.

ESP's food writer Kelly Jackson went along to try the Teppanyaki experience...

What I love about Peterborough’s Japanese Pan Asian restaurant Katana is the fact you can visit several times and have a completely different experience. So, when I suggested to friends about a catch-up at Katana on Broadway, we quickly agreed to try out its Teppanyaki menu for the first time.

It’s a unique experience right from the moment that you’re led to one of the u-shaped tables surrounding the chef’s cooking space. Our party of four sat with a family celebrating a birthday. If you’re after a quiet dinner with a loved one or friend, the live Teppanyaki menu is probably not for you. You’ll need to sit with other diners not in your party, so being ready to socialise and join in some fun and laughter with the rest of your table is a must to make the most of this dining experience.

After ordering drinks we perused the menu – the Teppanyaki set menu consists of a starter, a main course, grilled on a hot iron plate with rice and vegetables while you watch, and a dessert. You can also order separate items on the menu, but the set menus offer the best value for money.

Following much deliberation, I finally ordered from the Imperial set menu. For £37.50 (per person), I enjoyed chicken yakitori (chicken skewers in a teriyaki sauce); maki roll and crispy chicken Gyoza to start; succulent strips of chicken for my main; and a cheesecake to finish.

As you’d expect, the food was incredible, but the main draw for me was the live entertainment. Once we’d eaten our starters, it was time for the main course – and I don’t just mean the food! Our chef prepared the grill by dousing it with lots of oil – the flare of flames dazzled the crowds watching the performance – before throwing on the mixed veg and rice.

It was great being able to watch our food cooking right in front of our eyes, and it added to the whole immersive experience. We participated in a game to see who could catch a ball of rice in their mouths – sadly, I missed! By the time the entertainment was over, my mouth was tingling with the anticipation of tasting the delicious aromas filling the air around us.

The food is freshly prepared, cooked with plenty of care, and is of a really high quality. Yes, it’s not a cheap night out when you add in drinks, but this is the ideal experience for a pay day treat or to mark a celebration.

The look and feel of the restaurant itself is also gorgeous; with beautiful interior design features it really does have the wow factor to make you feel extra special. There is also the Bubbles Bar if you just want to pop in for drinks (including saké) and if you’re a cocktail connoisseur their wide selection are beautifully crafted and very tempting!

Demand for Katana’s Teppanyaki tables is high, especially on a Friday and Saturday, so booking in advance is essential. Believe me, you won’t regret it!

The ESP offer for a FREE bottle of Prosecco with your dinner reservation or a glass with your lunch is valid throughout July from Sunday to Thursday. Use the code ESPKATANA when you book.
