The new Helios exhibition brings brighter days to Peterborough Cathedral as the new artwork opens to the public today.
ESP went along to the preview evening last night to see this amazing installation of the sun suspended in the ceiling and it looks stunning.
We’ve loved all the works by artist Luke Jerram which have come the cathedral and Helios doesn’t disappoint. We’re all longing for sun at the moment so it’s perfect timing to brighten up a dreary February!

This spectacular touring artwork is on display here from February 10 to 28, supported by Peterborough Positive’s Small Grants Scheme.
Gary Cowling, Events Manager at Peterborough Cathedral said – “Luke Jerram’s installations have captivated our visitors time and again. Following the tremendous success of Museum of the Moon, Gaia and Mars here at the Cathedral, we are confident that Helios will be just as inspiring, moving and memorable.”

It’s amazing standing beneath it suspended from the Cathedral ceiling looking as if it’s floating overhead. It’s seven metres in diameter, and internally illuminated – perfect for some memorable selfies in this incredible setting.
Its name comes from ancient Greek mythology, Helios, the Sun god who was believed to drive his four-horse chariot across the sky each day, bringing light, seasons and life to the world.

The installation is accompanied by a specially commissioned surround-sound composition by Duncan Speakman and Sarah Anderson, weaving together birdsong, choral textures, global musical influences, manipulated fire recordings and NASA mission audio all adding to the atmosphere.

An accompanying programme of exciting events is available offering further opportunities to explore the science, beauty and artistry behind the work. Tickets for all events are on sale now on the Peterborough Cathedral website: https://peterborough-cathedral.org.uk/all-events/
