If you’re in training for the PGER why not get some help at new free training sessions?
Organisers of the 2013 Perkins Great Eastern Run are once again offering free training sessions for people to help them prepare for race day.
Peterborough’s half marathon and fun run takes place at the city’s Embankment on Sunday October 13 and entries for both races are filling up faster than in its previous eight-year history. ESP reporter Mikey Clarke is among those already set tot ake part and he’ll be raising money for Arthritis Research UK.
More than 2,300 runners have already signed up to the half marathon and the free training sessions, which start on Wednesday July 10, are expected to be well attended.
The fortnightly sessions will take place at Peterborough Embankment Athletics Track on Bishops Road, which has just reopened to the public following an extensive refurbishment project.
The training evenings are led by experienced runners and coaches from Peterborough’s leading local running clubs and are overseen by fully qualified UK Athletics endurance coaches. Training starts with a warm-up at 7pm and will last between 30 and 90 minutes depending on ability.
The sessions are suitable for people of all levels of fitness and experience with runners split into groups that reflect their ability. Advice on progressing training away from the fortnightly sessions will also be available along with advice on the correct running shoes, injury prevention and nutrition.
Tim Cook, chairman of the Greater Peterborough Athletics Network told ESP – “We are looking forward to helping more runners than ever at our fortnightly sessions. People new to running the half marathon and who are just starting their training will really reap the benefits.
“There is no need to book and the sessions attract everyone, from those who are just starting, to competitors who have been running for years. It is a no pressure environment and people attending will get excellent help and advice from experienced runners and coaches from all the running clubs in Peterborough.”
Annette Joyce, Head of Commercial Operations at Peterborough City Council, told ESP – “With just 100 days to go until the start of the Perkins Great Eastern Run, now is the time to ramp up your training. We have had hundreds of runners enter the race for the first time and the majority plan to attend the free training evenings.
“I cannot recommend attending the training sessions enough. They are led by the best local coaches and previous feedback from participants has always highlighted how motivated and focused the sessions have made them feel.”
