FILM REVIEW: STUBER (15) ESP RATING: 3/5

Despite good word of mouth this buddy cop actioner will be leaving the Showcase Cinema De Lux in Peterborough today – but it’s well worth a drive to see it if you can.

This comedy-driven (literally) sees mild-mannered Uber driver Stu (The Big Sick’s Kumail Nanjiani) pick up Dave Bautista’s (The Guardians of the Galaxy’s Drax) grizzled detective Vic – who is hot on the trail of a sadistically bloodthirsty terrorist.

The only problem is Vic has terrible eyesight, and has just had laser eye surgery, so he’s virtually blind and he needs Stu to guide him from location to location so he can kill his foe who murdered his partner (Guardians of the Galaxy co-star Karen Gillan).

So Stu finds himself thrust into a harrowing ordeal where he has to avoid danger and work with his passenger – while maintaining his high customer service rating.

And with it being a notch up from the likes of Central Intelligence – due to pockets of laugh out loud more hi-brow comedy – the Nanjiani/Bautista combo works, despite clever ideas coming together in an ultimately formulaic way.

ESP Rating: 3/5
