If ever there was an award for the most needless remake of all-time – then this just might take first prize.

This soulless reimagining of the cult classic action-thriller from 1991 provides a Silver Anniversary present of impressive stunt sequences and a few nods to the first film – but sadly nothing more than that.

The out-of-his-depth Bracey stars as respected former motocross star Johnny Utah, who turns his hand (quite unrealistically) to the FBI after a traumatic event leaves him guilt-ridden.

Just before earning his final stripes with the bureau, he shows his commitment to the cause by connecting the dots between a group of eco-terrorists – led by Ramirez’s Bodhi – who are committing crimes with a ‘Robin Hood’ type ideology.

Their well-planned heists seem to coincide with the ‘Ozaki Eight’ trials, in which the participants can achieve the idyllic state of ‘Nirvana’ by taking part in challenges only achievable by the most hardcore sports experts in the world – and Utah looks to infiltrate this group.

Along the way he befriends a female (Teresa Palmer), gets formulaic assistance from Delroy Lindo and Ray Winstone – and simply ends several action set pieces with a party.

And in terms of story that’s about the grand scale of things, as this actioner moves away from the simply effective surfing and sky-diving roots of the original – by providing several stop-start set-pieces around one extreme premise.

Ramirez, and maybe the up-and-coming Kristen Stewart lookalike Palmer, are the only two to come out of this relatively unscathed – but this is as dispensable as writer Kurt Zimmer’s 2012 Total Recall remake.

Point Break – more like Pointless Break.
