FILM REVIEW: NON-STOP (12A)

Liam Neeson has a very particular set of skills. Skills he has acquired over a very long career. Skills that make him the king of action B-Movies.

Neeson has done a ‘reverse Matthew McConaughey’ – transforming himself from a serious award winning actor in films such as Michael Collins and Schindler’s List, into a fist-clenching Hollywood beefcake in movies like Taken and The Grey. But that’s OK; at least we know what we’re letting ourselves in for these days with a Neeson flick… a daft but entertaining action thriller.

Non-Stop sees a depressed Air Marshal named Bill Marks (Neeson), who receives a text message in mid-flight, warning him that someone on-board will be killed every 20 minutes unless $150 million is wired into an electronic account.

As an audience, we get to play ‘Guess Who’ alongside Bill, as he races against the clock to figure out the identity of the killer. It’s almost laughable how shifty each central character looks, making them all potential suspects. Before long, we’re left wondering whether we can even trust Bill.

This adventure flick reteams Neeson with Director, Jaume Collet-Serra, but don’t worry; this is more satisfying than their previous collaboration, ‘Unknown’, which lost its way after 45 minutes.

There are a few plot holes in the script, but if you’re able to turn off your overhead light (brain) for a couple of hours then they shouldn’t become too distracting. In fact, switching off your brain is the key to getting the most out of this (as stated above) daft but entertaining action thriller.

So, sit back, relax, enjoy your flight, and let Neeson warm you up for the bigger and louder blockbusters out this summer.
