FILM REVIEW: CRAWL (15) ESP RATING: 3.5/5

The director of Piranha 3D doesn’t just show he’s adept at dealing with underwater terror – but also shows he can switch between tongue-in-cheek action and the more serious tone of this thriller.

And he – along with stars Kaya Scodelario (The Maze Runner) and Barry Pepper (Saving Private Ryan) – do a top-notch job by providing a compelling alligator ‘scarer’ that ticks all the right boxes.

Competitive swimmer Haley (Scodelario) defies all logic by driving through the ‘mouth’ of a destructive Category Five hurricane to try and locate her estranged father (Pepper) in her Florida hometown.

But instead she finds herself trapped in a flooded and weather-beaten house fighting for her life against bloodthirsty alligators – who have entered through a drain in the ‘crawl’ basement of her father’s house.

It doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but the good thing is it’s actually not too ‘over the top’ – with the computer-generated alligators looking sensational – and you actually find yourself caring for the leads during several notable ‘jump out of your seat’ scenes.

Throw in a handful of bloody deaths for those who like that kind of thing and Crawl notches up ninety minutes of ‘snappy’ action – that has plenty of bite.

ESP Rating: 3.5/5
