ESP PANTO REVIEW: DICK WHITTINGTON AT THE KEY THEATRE

It’s time to boo, hiss and cheer as panto season gets underway in Peterborough.

The Key Theatre in Peterborough has just launched its run of Dick Whittington and ESP caught one of the performances to see if it’s the purrfect panto for the kids this Christmas.

Our reporter Karen Devine took some of the youngsters in the family along and says – “Dick Whittington was really entertaining, good family fun for all ages with the usual slapstick comedy and of course entertainment for the adults.

"There’s plenty of the usual ‘adult humour’ (which goes above the kids heads) in abundance and lots of quick one liners. I had a smile on my face throughout the show!”

The story of Dick Whittington and his cat heading off to London to find fame and fortune is classic panto and this version with an original script and music promises lots of local laughs. With help from the magical Fairy Bowbells and his trusted feline friend, Dick must stop the wicked Queen Rat from stealing all the sweets and taking over London.

Simon Aylin is back by popular demand as Dick, David Griffin-Stephens provides the laughs as Dame Fanny Fitzbottom and the original music is by Simon Hanson.

The intimate auditorium at the Key Theatre is always great for the kids with a wonderful view from every seat. Being close to the action on stage really draws the youngsters in and they soon feel part of the show.

“They really got the kids participating in the show throughout which was lovely to see,” adds Karen, “and of course the villain, which was Queen Rat, was just brilliant … Oh no she wasn’t, oh yes she was!”

So can we recommend this one for the festive season – “Absolutely,” says Karen. “All in all, it’s a colourful, very funny pantomime that is for all the family – don’t miss it.”

There are plenty of opportunities to see Dick Whittington at Peterborough’s Key Theatre with performances through until January 8, 2023.
