ESP magazine is supporting the 19th Peterborough Dragon Boat Race this summer as the new print media partner for this top city event.
It’s a great start to 2017 as the city’s magazine plans a year of activities celebrating 18 years in print.
Editor Sharon McAllister said: “We have always promoted all the great stuff happening locally every month so it’s fantastic to now be involved in one of the most popular Peterborough events. We are also keen supporters of charities like Sue Ryder and are looking forward to helping fundraise for such a good cause.”
The launch of the event will link with Chinese New Year and shoppers will be given the chance to climb aboard a full size dragon boat at a special event on Saturday January 28.
The boat, complete with paddles, drum and dragon’s head will be stationed at Serpentine Green Shopping Centre between 9am and 5pm. There’ll be the chance to sit in the boat, try the paddles for size and enjoy a taste of this year’s festival dished up by organisers Gable Events and charity partner Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice.
ESP will be there along with Connect FM joining in the fun and celebrating Chinese New Year and the start of the year of the rooster.
This year’s Peterborough Dragon Boat Festival, now in its 19th year, will take place on Saturday June 10 at Peterborough Rowing Lake.
Up to 50 teams will battle it out over the 200 metre course, cheered on by their supporters who’ll be able to enjoy lots of bankside fun and fundraising activities between races.
The dragon boats, qualified helms and all racing equipment are provided, no previous experience is required and each crew is guaranteed a minimum of three races.

Crews will be invited to raise money for Thorpe Hall Hospice before and on the day of the race. It costs £2.8 million a year to provide incredible care at the Sue Ryder hospice – £1.5 million of that has to come from fundraising.
Thorpe Hall fundraiser Nilesh Patel said: “We’re so pleased to be the charity partner of the Peterborough Dragon Boat Festival for the third year running. Judging by past performances we’re never going to win any awards on the water but we’re great at cheering on other teams and supporting those who choose to use the event to fundraise for us!
“At the moment we’re asking people to pledge to do #JustOneThing to support Thorpe Hall – signing up a workplace team for the Festival is just one of the ways of doing this.”
