EAST END HARD MAN TURNS SPORTSMAN

Peterborough is set to host a sporting event for people with disabilities and actor Steve McFadden, alias Phil Mitchell from Eastenders, will be making a special guest appearance.

The Mayor’s Charity Committee will host Sporting Saturday, Peterborough’s first ever sports and leisure event for people with disabilities, older people, their families and carers on Saturday January 18, 10am to 8pm at the Cresset, Bretton.

This special event will showcase over 40 organisations and clubs who provide accessible facilities for disabled people in and around Peterborough and the well known soap star will be one of the special guests. Steve McFadden will be hosting some of the afternoon activities and will be there from 3pm.

Entry costs just two pounds and there’ll be the chance to take part in a range of activities for all abilities as well as gain a wealth of expert help, information and advice.

Amongst the activities to have a go at are indoor cricket and archery, static rowing, table tennis and goal ball.


In addition the police will deliver boxing taster sessions, Master Parkers Serial Kickers will attempt to set the world record for most participants in a karate class and the YMCA gym will be inspiring everyone to keep fit with their fitness taster sessions. Visitors will also have the opportunity to attend a dance class in preparation for dancing the night away at Sporting Saturday’s disco.

Various non-physical activities have also been organised such as arts and crafts , music production sessions, a retro and vintage fashion show and poetry writing classes.

The Mayor Councillor June Stokes (pcitured left), British wheelchair basketball star Sarah Grady, Peterborough MP Stewart Jackson, Peterborough City Council Chief Executive Gillian Beasley, and Leader of the City Council Marco Cereste, are amongst the confirmed guests.

I want to personally thank the local organisations, clubs and special guests who have come together with the Mayor’s Charity Committee to make Peterborough’s first Sporting Saturday a success. I look forward to seeing you there.”

Bryan Tyler, Chair of the Mayor’s Charity Committee said: “We are very proud to be hosting this special event – the first of its kind for Peterborough. The support from our local organisations and clubs has been fantastic.”
