DIWALI SET TO LIGHT UP CITY!

This weekend the city centre will come alive with festivities as Peterborough celebrates Diwali and this year’s highlight will be a special dance production.

As part of Peterborough’s fourth Diwali celebrations, Phizzical Productions presents Circle of Light, a spectacular visual arts experience inspired by the stories in the Ramayana.

The Circle of Light is an explosion of light, colour and dance which will be performed on stage in Cathedral Square on the evening of Saturday October 22.

With choreography by Subhash Viman, the production blends urban, contemporary and classical Indian dance forms and involves a cast of dancers and actors sourced from the local area.

Live music fusing traditional Indian instruments such as the tabla and sita and western instruments, composed by Devesh Sodha, will accompany the performance.

Phizzical have previously taken part in Leicester’s Diwali, which is said to be the largest Diwali celebration outside of India and are coming here in association with Vivacity Peterborough Culture and Leisure.

The free event celebrates the last day of the Hindu calendar – similar to New Year’s Eve and represents a new start.

Members of the city’s large Indian community have worked together with the City Council and Vivacity to stage this year’s exciting day of festivities and welcome everyone along to enjoy it.

Thousands are expected at the Diwali festival which is family friendly, free for all and wheelchair accessible. The Mayor will light a symbolic lamp at 11am to get things started.

There’ll be food stalls, dance and music throughout the day in and around Cathedral Square through until 7pm.

There’ll be four showings of the fabulous dance performance with the first starting at 4.30pm and then the next shows will be at 5pm, 5.30pm and 6pm.
