COWGATE STREET PARTY

A street celebration’s being held on Saturday August 10 to mark the official opening of one of Peterborough’s most historic streets…

The city centre’s really been transformed over the last few months and now a 12-month project to rejuvenate Cowgate has been completed with the widening of footpaths to create a more pedestrian-friendly street, new paving, refreshed shop fronts, new lighting and blossoming planters. King Street which leads from Cowgate has also been repaved as part of the project.

Councillor Janet Goodwin, Cabinet Advisor to the Leader for Business Engagement, Tourism and International Links for Peterborough City Council, said: “Cowgate has been a key part of Peterborough city centre for many years and it was certainly in need of a face lift. The works have really enhanced the appearance of the whole area, maintaining a period feel to honour the history it holds.

“Members of the Cowgate Traders’ Association, Ringway and all the traders have been brilliant throughout the works and I can’t thank them enough for their commitment to creating a street we can all be proud of.”

Cowgate and King Street will host a street celebration on Saturday August 10 thanks to funding from Ringway.

Entertainment will be provided by jazz bands Freddie and Friends and Jazzbeens, who regularly perform at the Guildhall, and Bailey’s Sandwich Bar will host a barbecue.

Traders along Cowgate and King Street will also be offering an array of one-off discounts and special offers from free pizza slices and cake to half-price designer glasses and discounted estate agent fees.

There will also be a selection of tents erected in King Street where Cowgate traders including The Beautiful Truth, The Drapers Arms and Designer Leathers will be giving live demonstrations and tasters in the form of mini manicures, free pizza, reduced leather jackets and ale tasting.

John Drewnicki Chairman of Cowgate Traders’ Association (CTA) said: “I am thrilled to see the works completed and to such a high standard. Ringway has worked hard to support Cowgate traders and has kept people well informed throughout the works. In addition, they have now been generous enough to fund a street-party celebration of the completed works for the people of Peterborough to enjoy.

“The city council deserves enormous congratulations on what they have achieved in the rejuvenation of Cowgate and we are all very grateful to them. The street looks great and we hope to see successful trading on Cowgate continue for many years to come.”
