Talented artists’ work to provide a first class impression for passengers at Peterborough Station.
Creative students from City College Peterborough are showcasing their talents to thousands of rail travellers, in a unique art exhibition, in the waiting room at the City’s train station.
Peterborough Station, a key gateway to the city, has been chosen as the ‘gallery’ for the work, with the exhibition receiving an official civic unveiling this week by the Mayor of Peterborough, Cllr David Over.
The station has recently benefited from a £3 million makeover to improve the facilities and environment for visitors and local people, and the exhibition forms part of East Coast Trains’ support for art and culture across the country.
The aim of the project is to encourage people of all skills and abilities to enjoy and support arts within the community. Students at the college were invited to use their artistic skills and talent to create art inspired by the railways and rail travel.
Over 60 budding artists took part in the initiative, with East Coast staff based at Peterborough Station facing the tough task of deciding which six pieces of art will be displayed in the Platform 1 waiting area for passengers to enjoy.
The unveiling this week marks the culmination of the competition.
East Coast Head of Stations Steve Newland said: “We’ve been overwhelmed by the amazing talent, skills and inspiration shown by the students’ work. Our team faced a tough task to shortlist the final selection of paintings as the standard of work and creativity was so high.
“We are delighted to support local arts in the city and are thrilled to have the involvement of City College Peterborough. We look forward to the enjoyment this exhibition will bring to visitors using the Platform 1 waiting room at Peterborough station.”
College Principal, Pat Carrington, said: “It is a great honour for our students to be able to showcase their work at Peterborough station, one of the major gateways to the city.
“Our students primarily study art for their own enjoyment and pleasure and it is a great credit to the artistic skills that the College was approached to take part in this exhibition.
“We have a great reputation for nurturing creative talent, and over the recent past students from this college have exhibited their work at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London as well as regional and local galleries and community locations.”
