20th PETERBOROUGH DRAGON BOAT RACE SET TO BE BEST IN YEARS

Dozens of entries have been flooding in for this year’s event on Saturday June 9 and it’s hoped they could top 40 teams.

There’s still time to sign up and join in the fun so why not join us on the water?

ESP’s Motley Crew will be joining the action on the Rowing Lake once again as the event’s print media partner and we can’t wait. It’s organised by Gable Events and is both fun to take part in and to watch with a great day out of exciting racing every few minutes on the water and bankside activities.

Local accountants Rawlinsons are keen to support the event charity Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice and say it’s a great experience.

“It’s a really fun day out allowing different teams within the office to socialise and build a team spirit. We’ll have a real mix from senior management right through to first year trainees, representing every department in the firm. One of our trainees has been in training since the last event feeling his lack of biceps contributed to us not qualifying for the knock out stages!”

The team from Serpentine Green Shopping Centre’s Steve Coulson joked –

“It’s a great day for all involved and raises much need funds for a great cause, this year we are hiring an outboard motor to assist in minor propulsion of our craft to do better than coming last, if we come last we don’t care… we took part and survived and will be ready again for next year.”

It’s not all businesses taking part, Christine’s Crazy Crew will be paddling in memory of Christine Seims who was cared for at Thorpe Hall Hospice in Peterborough in February this year.

Her daughter Melissa said: “In those final days and hours as we all gathered at the hospice to say our final goodbyes, I noticed a poster advertising the Dragon Boat Festival.

“We sat by Mum’s bed all very emotional and almost in an effort to lighten the mood at a terrible time I made a flippant comment about us entering a team. The idea gave us an anchor at that time, it was something to hold on to for the future and a chance to celebrate the memory of Mum and raise funds for the Sue Ryder Hospice who had been so kind to us all.”

The event is sponsored by Motorpoint and there’ll be commentary on the races by Connect FM. There’s still time to sign up so why not take the plunge?
