Hold on to your hairdo – this musical will blow your mind.

No wonder this show’s sold out the Cresset – the Peterborough Operatic & Dramatic Society have held as firm as Ultra Clutch hairspray when it comes to the consistent quality of their productions.

The award-winning musical theatre group have followed their previous successes with the Witches of Eastwick and the Adams Family Musical in hip wiggling style bringing us a fabulous fun night out with the ever popular Hairpsray.

The story of the big girl with the big hair do and an even bigger heart sees Tracy Turnblad challenge the narrow mindedness that surrounds her as she battles to appear on The Corny Collins show on TV, along with her black friends, all while trying to catch the eye of the show’s hearthrob Link Larkin.

A great cast put their all into the show which captured every bit of the infectious energy Hairspray is famous for. It’s a big cast too and they all gave a big performance with brilliant support from the live band.

Katie-Rose Parker as Tracy Turnblad nailed the starring role supported by a great comic performance by Hannah Joy Gibson as her friend Penny and of course mum Edna – famously portrayed in the movie version by none other than John Travolta – was perfectly brought to life by Alex Broadfield.

Amanda Villamayor made a fabulously wicked Velma Von Tussle and Leitina Reuben-Travers as Motormouth Maybelle has a show stopping voice. It seems almost unfair to single anyone out though, as everyone played their part with energy and enthusiasm.

If you didn’t grab your ticket in time you really missed out – but if you did, we bet you went home with a smile on your face humming “You can’t stop the motion of the ocean, or the sun in the sky…” just like we did.

It’s big, it’s bold… welcome to the 60s indeed!

Thank you for a fantastic night out PODS. We’re looking forward to your next production already.
