ESP game reviewer Gavin Miller returns to the controls to test out this latest release which might just be on your Christmas wish-list…
DESTINY 2: BEYOND LIGHT, PEGI RATING: 16. DEVELOPERS: BUNGIE. REVIEWED VIA XBOX ONE X, OUT NOW
The latest major yearly expansion update for Bungie’s award-winning RPG shooter doesn’t reinvent the wheel – but still brings plenty to the table.
The main storyline takes place on Jupiter’s snow-covered moon of Europa – the perfect locale that shows off breathtakingly-realistic wind-sweeping elements – as you must uncover ancient secrets below the ice, and stop the evil Eramis, the Kell of Darkness, bestowing her dark-powered sorcery on her Fallen forces.
To tackle this new menacing foe, your Guardian must master the ‘Darkness’ with an impressive new subclass known as Stasis – as the Destiny 2 (which started in 2017) universe continues to competently expand.
The roughly 6-7 hour campaign probably needs a bit more depth and explanation, but the new destination of Europa – coupled with the original Destiny fan-favourite Cosmodrome setting being re-introduced – and a generally more satisfying difficulty curve, makes this a worthy extension of lore with the Season of the Hunt now begun, and the Deep Stone Crypt raid ready to test the best of the best.
It may ultimately need a bit more of a refresh – when the next expansion The Witch Queen hits next year – with some aspects of the game (see Crucible) starting to look a bit too familiar, but this is still a truly classic all-round package that deserves to be fated as one of the best of its kind.
ESP Rating: 4/5
