A record number of people headed into Peterborough at the weekend to enjoy a huge Heritage Festival which saw a Viking battle in Cathedral Square!

A record breaking 37,600 visitors attended and the re-enactments were the highlight of a weekend of free activities in Peterborough city centre, involving 300 costumed re-enactors and 30 historical societies, representing key periods throughout Peterborough’s local history, from Bronze Age warriors to World War II soldiers.

Chief Executive of Vivacity, Kevin Tighe, says: “I am pleased to say that this was the busiest weekend we have ever seen at the Peterborough Heritage Festival. We have had an overwhelming response and people clearly enjoyed themselves, with visitors coming from Peterborough and all over the country. I would like to say a big thank you to our sponsors Perkins, without whose support, we would not have been able to put on this event.”

The festival saw encampments around the Cathedral Precincts, living history displays and a period market and food fayre, as well as a children’s zone in the Cathedral’s cloisters.

The popular annual event was organised by Vivacity Peterborough Culture and Leisure, in association with Peterborough Cathedral, and supported by Perkins Engines Company Limited.

Richard Graves, Marketing Promotions Manager at Perkins, says: “Given our connection to the city we are delighted to sponsor the Peterborough Heritage Festival, celebrating the rich history of the city and people who have shaped it. I would like to thank everyone who has put in so much hard work into creating the UK’s largest living history festival, including Vivacity, Peterborough Cathedral, all of the volunteers, and of course the re-enactors.”

Peterborough Museum also played its part with a Steampunk takeover with the Clockwork Infirmary event. There were some fantastic Steampunk fans wearing some incredible outfits and several stalls selling the accessories Steampunk fans love including, jewellery, hats and fashions.

In addition to the main weekend, there are a wide variety of fringe events, running through until July 10.

ESP was there to capture the action and we think it was a great event for the city.
