THE WINDMILL LAUNCHES CARVERY

You simply can’t go wrong with a hearty carvery, especially when it’s cold and windy outside. So, you’ll be pleased to hear that there’s now even more choice in Peterborough.

The Windmill pub and restaurant in Orton Waterville, Peterborough has just launched a new carvery menu. The ESP team were invited to try it out the day before it was officially unveiled to customers. Safe to say, we left feeling full and satisfied, vowing to spread the word to family and friends about how good it was.

From just £14.45 per person, diners can opt for roast turkey, honey roast gammon or prime roast beef. Can’t decide? Why not sample a slice of each? A plant-based special is also available.

Like all carveries, once the chef has dished out the meat and a Yorkshire pudding, you’re then free to help yourself to as many vegetables, roast potatoes, stuffing and gravy as you can manage – or fit on to your plate! A selection of condiments, including mint sauce, apple sauce and mustard, can also be added if you so wish.

The food is fresh and locally sourced. We tried a little of all three meats, so that we were better able to report back to you. The meat was succulent and not tough to chew or cut into. The roast potatoes had just the right amount of crispiness on top and were super soft and delicious inside.

We especially enjoyed the crispy, roughened edges of the Yorkshire puddings, too - just how we like them! Vegetables on the menu are seasonal, so we were greeted with carrots, various greens and honey-glazed roasted parsnips, which were by far my favourite. The portion was plentiful, but if you’re partial to a bigger helping of meat, you can go large for an extra £3.

Everyone knows a carvery is best rounded off with dessert. The pudding menu offers a variety of British pub favourites for £6 each. After much deliberation, our final choices were cheesecake, topped with fruit and a side of ice cream, and a huge sticky toffee pudding. Although it was a large chunk, the sponge was so light and fluffy that you can easily devour it all. Plus, it’s not as sickly as some like sticky toffee puddings often are.

Of course, not everyone is a big carvery fan and that certainly doesn’t pose an issue. Customers can choose another dish from the main menu, as the carvery is simply an added addition to The Windmill’s varied offering. This includes popular dishes such as steak and ale pie, beer battered cod, plant burger, seabass, brisket burger and more.

A section of the restaurant has been carved out (ahem!) for the carvery counter, which serves food from 12 noon to closing. You can also take your carvery plates back into the bar area if you fancy a more relaxed setting. All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to sample this delicious new carvery and would thoroughly recommend it.

At the moment, the carvery is available every day of the week, but this is likely to change as we move into the warmer months. Pre-booking is advised, as it’s sure to be a hit with Peterborough residents and beyond.
