It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas… and we have to say the city centre’s looking fab this year!
The wonderful lights are on, the tree is up, and the party has definitely started.
Around 8,000 people turned out to see the big city centre lights switch on event organised by Peterborough City Council and hosted by Radio Cambridgeshire and even more lights have now been added along Long Causeway, Rivergate and outside the Town Hall.
The ESP Dance Crew launched the event which was hosted by BBC radio presenters Paul Stainton and Nick Carter and Santa, Pudsey and the Mayor all joined in the fun throughout tthe day and early evening.
The switch on was a great free day and although well known bands like the One Eyed Cats didn’t disappoint, the event really showcased some of our local young talent.
Annette Joyce, Assistant Director for Commercial Operations at Peterborough City Council, told ESP she was delighted with how the day went – “The switch-on event attracted thousands of people to Cathedral Square and it was great to see so many extending their stay by doing a spot of Christmas shopping and having a meal with their families in our excellent restaurants.
“This is a wonderful, magical time of year that brings people from across Peterborough and the wider region together to see our stunning city centre illuminated in all its historic glory.”
So if you haven’t seen the lights yet, head into town as soon as you can to check them out, it’s really good to see Peterborough looking so festive!
We had a great time at the lights switch on which saw entertainment from some really impressive local talent and we have to mention the youngsters from Jem’s Hip Hop – those kids can move!
Jems Hip Hop often attend national competitions and recently met ‘Boyband’ from TV dance show Got to Dance at a workshop! They have around 1,000 students at classes across Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire. Definitely one to get the kids involved with if they want to learn to dance. If you want to find out about a class near you get in touch – take a look at www.jemshiphop.co.uk
Another group of youngsters who certainly deserve a mention are the Peterborough Youth Choir who sang festive carols and Christmas tunes such as Walking in the Air.
You can catch these kids in action again at the Christmas Magic concert at the Broadway theatre on Sunday December 21. If your kids would like to learn to sing you can find out more on www.peterboroughmvchoir.org
Tickets are available from the Visistor Information Centre on 0333 666 3366.
Now the city’s looking wonderfully Christmassy, the next great addition will be the arrival of the traditional Christmas market which sets up in Cathedral Square from Wednesday December 10 through until Tuesday December 23 where you can pick up some tasty treats, quality gifts and decorations.
