The Broadway Theatre has opened in style with Marti Pellow in Evita performing to a packed auditorium. ESP’s Emma Bothamley reports…
It was an amazing opening night at the Broadway. From the moment we arrived at the packed foyer there was a real buzz of excitement amongst the gathered crowd and the show did not disappoint at all.
It was a truly moving and emotional performance from all the cast, and Marti Pellow as Che was simply fantastic! Madalena Alberto gave a superb performance as Eva and her transformation from aspiring actress to wife of Peron was captivating. All the songs were beautifully delivered – Don’t Cry For Me Argentina, Another Suitcase in Another Hall, Rainbow High, You Must Love Me.
There were some excellent and energetic choreographed dance numbers and a particularly wonderful solo from a child from the Peterborough Youth Choir and the whole choir were amazing.
The cast received a well deserved standing ovation from the packed theatre and with the Broadway lying empty for so long, it seemed a very fitting close to its opening night as well as the show’s first night.
In the audience was the man behind this amazing season of shows, producer Bill Kenwright, former Broadway owner Peter Boizot, Posh’s Barry Fry, current Broadway owner Rinaldo Fasulo and Kevin Tighe from Vivacity which has been instrumental in bringing these shows to Peterborough.
After the show, Bill Kenwright spoke of the show and said that the set of Evita was one of the biggest that they’ve ever travelled with. He also acknowledged the theatre’s past and hoped that Evita and the other upcoming shows will be the start of a new future for the theatre and hoped people will come and support it.
After last night’s performance I really hope that it is a new start.
