SPOOKY SEASON AT FLAG FEN

Ghost hunting, Halloween adventures, immersive events and an evening of mediumship are among the highlights at Flag Fen Archaeology Park this October.

As autumn settles over the Fens, Flag Fen is embracing the spooky season with a programme of events for families, history enthusiasts and those brave enough to venture out after dark…

The month begins with a Paranormal Evening on Saturday 3 October, offering visitors the chance to explore the ancient site after dark alongside professional ghost hunters Spirit Norwich. Participants will hear stories of Flag Fen’s prehistoric past from archaeological and historical storyteller Michelle Bullivant before taking part in a paranormal investigation using equipment including EMF meters, dowsing rods, pendulums and trigger objects.

For families, Halloween Fun returns from 24 to 31 October, transforming Flag Fen into a magical autumn adventure during the school half term. Children can pick their own pumpkin, make a broomstick with Wenzel the Wizard or Whizzy the Witch, follow a Fairytale Scarecrow Trail and search the roundhouse for Wenzel’s missing spell pages. There will also be opportunities to toast marshmallows around the fire, alongside Flag Fen’s usual family attractions including the Bronze and Iron Age roundhouses, Museum, play area, Big Dig Tent and Roundhouse play village.

On Friday 23 October, visitors can enjoy a more spiritual night with an Evening of Mediumship with Nicola Ghigi. The intimate 90-minute event includes two 45-minute sessions, with an interval, while the Roundhouse Café will also be open for refreshments. Places are limited, and the previous event sold out!

The Halloween celebrations culminate with Fright Night on Friday 30 and Saturday 31 October, when the landscape will take on a darker atmosphere. Created in collaboration with Kindred Drama, the immersive experience will combine mystery, folklore, live performance and spooky scares, with visitors journeying through themed zones inspired by ancient history and East Anglian folklore. With theatrical encounters, storytelling and haunting visuals, Fright Night asks: what happens when the spirits of the Fen awaken after dark?

More to see and do this October…

On Saturday 24 October, Flag Fen hosts its next Astronomy Evening, inviting you to discover the universe from the Fenland landscape. Led by experienced astronomer Dean Watson, the sessions offer guided exploration of the night sky and the opportunity to view celestial objects through professional telescopes. No previous experience or equipment is required.

You can also experience Fen to Fire, an immersive digital art installation reconstructing the 3,000-year-old Must Farm settlement, until 18 October. Free to view in the Flag Fen Visitor Centre, the installation uses 3D modelling, motion capture and AI to offer a glimpse into life at the remarkable Bronze Age settlement near Whittlesey.
