An independent pub in Peterborough is celebrating its first birthday and despite the recent challenges is thriving once again in the city centre.
Indian gastro pub Tap & Tandoor brought something unique to Peterborough last year and after a successful opening it quickly built a strong reputation for fine food, craft beers and great cocktails.
“We believe in delivering the best quality food, drink and experience,” Anand, the manager of the Tap & Tandor in Peterborough told ESP.
“Being an independent pub, we emphasise our local produce and local suppliers, from free range meat to the weird and wonderful beers we have on offer.”
It certainly offered something new and brought renewed life to the former Carluccio’s restaurant in Cumbergate. The Tap & Tandoor concept was embraced and soon built up a strong following. Then of course lockdown happened – but this team of entrepreneurs soon adapted.
“Being located in the city centre, it was a little harder during lockdown as our regular customers obviously had to stay local, however once we launched our collection and delivery service it was great to start seeing familiar faces again.”
The gastro pub sports a shabby chic styling, seating in shades of blue and green, rustic tables, metal stools and beautiful pendant lighting adding to the vibe, but it’s their unique offering that has set them apart. Craft beer, homestyle curries, mixed grills and cocktails have proved a winning formula and have seen customers eagerly return.
“It’s great to see the people of Peterborough supporting independent businesses,” says Anand. “Soon after opening again, the government scheme launched, and we’ve never been busier, but we continue to ensure our social distancing measures are met. Our top priority is for our guests to feel safe and comfortable when visiting Tap & Tandoor.”
The food may be delicious but as a pub the variety and quality of the drinks are equally important and you’ll certainly get to sample something different when you pop to the bar.
“Our beers are sourced from the best breweries across the UK and around the world,” Anand explains. “We have a few firm favourites such as Kona Big Wave, Purity Lawless Lager, Veltin’s Pilsener and Peroni which are always on tap and the rest of our taps change weekly, so you can try a different beer each time you visit! Each beer is selected to complement our food offering. Our cocktails are made from well sourced ingredients, using Indian cuisine as inspiration.”
The lockdown may have made the Tap & Tandoor’s first year a bit of a bumpy ride but they are optimistic for the future and keen for more customers to safely experience what they have brought to Peterborough’s drinking and dining out scene.
“It may have been an odd first year, but we remain positive seeing the thriving independent scene in Peterborough. Our focus will always be on a quality offering for our guests from our fantastic range of beers to our bespoke cocktails, our all day menu and our extensive vegan menu.”
