A music education charity which supports four Peterborough choirs has been given a 50k grant from the Government.
Peterborough Sings! has been awarded the lifeline grant as part of the Government’s £1.57 billion Culture Recovery Fund (CRF) – it’s one of 1,385 cultural and creative organisations across the country receiving urgently needed support which includes The Cresset and New Theatre in Peterborough.
£257 million of investment was announced as part of the very first round of the Culture Recovery Fund grants programme being administered by Arts Council England. Further rounds of funding in the cultural and heritage sector are due to be announced over the coming weeks so it’s still fingers crossed for several other Peterborough organisations awaiting news.
Thousands of people have enjoyed the concerts – such as the forthcoming Christmas Magic performance – and the support provided by Peterborough Sings! which was founded in 2011.
This music education charity supports two award winning non-auditioned adult choirs, Peterborough Male Voice Choir and Peterborough Voices, as well as Peterborough Community Chorus and Peterborough Youth Choir, which provides free-to-all singing tuition to children aged seven plus.
The charity also runs an extensive programme of outreach work to promote singing in the local community, including the Peterborough Schools’ Singing Strategy, the Peterborough Boys’ Voices Project and charity fundraising projects Sing for Life and Men United in Song.
William Prideaux, director of Peterborough Sings! said – “We’re delighted that Peterborough Sings! has been recognised as a key organisation in the cultural life of the city and with today’s award from the Culture Recovery Fund which will help us to shape the music education opportunities we are able to provide in Peterborough.
“At a time when many people are facing challenges in many areas of their lives and with culture and the arts hard hit by the pandemic it is more important than ever that we continue to actively engage with as wide a cross-section of our local community as possible and to provide them with high-quality cultural experiences.”
Peterborough Sings! aims to make singing accessible to everyone regardless of cultural, social or economic background and over the last decade has introduced thousands of local people to the joys of group singing, and has given them the chance to perform and collaborate with top class musicians including the BBC Concert Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Central Band of the RAF and the King’s Singers.
The Christmas Magic concert will see the adult choirs perform in Peterborough Cathedral on Saturday December 12 and an extra performance slot’s been added due to popular demand.
