Peterborough’s live music scene is on the up again, but it’s not been completely quiet for our local stars during the lockdowns. Rob Bull, a familiar face on the local music circuit, is a new contributor for ESP Magazine and Rob caught up with fellow city musician Spike T. Smith who managed to beat Bieber in the German charts…
Peterborough drumming legend Spike T. Smith has not been resting on his laurels during the lockdowns. The former Morrissey and Damned drummer not only maintains a busy schedule as a local and now international drum tutor but has also found time to leapfrog Justin Bieber in the charts.
Spike joined the death metal band Memoriam in the summer of 2020 with the Birmingham based outfit poised to record a fourth studio album and with a subsequent European tour in the works. The tour was unfortunately postponed for obvious Covid related reasons but the band was still able to get together and record their long awaited new album To The End.
Memoriam hold a cult following and an ever expanding fan base throughout Europe so it was no surprise that To The End received a great response on its release in March 2021, with some calling it the band’s finest work to date. As Spike told me during a recent chat – “The album has been amazingly well received; the general consensus being that it’s the band’s strongest of the four albums they have released so far.”

The album peaked at number nine in the German charts and saw Memoriam sitting just above Canadian megastar Justin Bieber, Spike added – “We were two places above him! Although I’m sure he won’t be sweating it too much, I’m sure he’s probably done pretty well with Spotify downloads!” The album also did well in numerous other European countries and even the USA where reviews have been largely enthusiastic and positive.
When asked about touring, Spike said – “The band had dates and festival appearances booked to promote the album throughout Europe this year. But of course so far everything keeps getting postponed. Maybe from July onwards we can hope for some shows to return and rehearsals starting before that, fingers crossed.”
You can check out Spike’s outstanding drumming performance on the new Memoriam album ‘To The End’ via all major download and streaming platforms. It’s also available in LP and CD format via Amazon, www.Memoriam.uk.com and Reaper Entertainment Europe.
