FILM REVIEW: THE REWRITE (12A)

Filmmaker Marc Lawrence teams up with Hugh Grant for the fourth time – getting the tone right for the first time.

Marc Lawrence is the Writer and Director behind forgettable rom-coms such as Music and Lyrics, Two Weeks’ Notice, and Did You Hear About the Morgans? With these films being the weaker of the flicks on Hugh’s CV, I was prematurely ready to write-off  The Rewrite.

I was pleasantly surprised.

The Rewrite focuses on Keith Michaels (Hugh Grant), a Screenwriter who was once at the top of his game, after winning a Golden Globe Award for a hit movie that he wrote. His acceptance speech shows him as a witty and charming celeb. Cut to fifteen years later, he’s divorced, broke, and hasn’t written a hit film in years. Just as he’s at his lowest, Keith’s agent gets in touch with the news that Binghamton University is looking for someone to teach a course in screenwriting. Keith reluctantly accepts the job offer with the intention of doing as little as possible whilst he’s there. Will the class be able to reignite his passion for writing and life itself? Head to the Showcase Cinema to find out.

Like with most rom-coms, there are touching moments thrown into the mix. Surprisingly, the most poignant moments come from the supporting cast. I particularly found myself rooting for a Star Wars fanatic student named Billy Frazier (Andrew Keenan-Bolger) and a mature student named Holly (Marisa Tomei) – who has a refreshingly positive look on life.

It’s been twenty years since Four Weddings and a Funeral. Since then, Hugh Grant has pretty much played the same bumbling and charmingly sarcastic Englishman. His character here is no exception, but that’s OK – would we want it any other way?
