This sequel to the refreshingly inspirational first movie is erm, pretty much, more of the same – with the major problem being is that it’s not really refreshing or inspirational any more.

The world of Chris Pratt’s Emmet and Elizabeth Banks’ Wyldstyle just isn’t as awesome – with a story that doesn’t really click into place as well as it did first time round.

It seems like more a ‘hodge-podge’ of ideas left on the drawing board from the original.

And when the leader of the Duplo army General Sweet Mayhem arrives to announce that the Queen (Tiffany Haddish) of Systar System intends to wed Will Arnett’s Batman – Mayhem kidnaps him, Wyldstyle, Benny (Charlie Day), Metalbeard (Nick Offerman) and Princess Unikitty (Alison Brie) and whisks them off into the cosmos.

Which leaves the mild-mannered Emmet to come up with a daring rescue plan – with the Justice League unable to help after disappearing years earlier – that will take him across the galaxy.

On his journey he crosses paths with Rex Dangervest (also voiced by Pratt) – a galaxy-defending space cowboy that is an amalgamation of previous roles played by Pratt – and they combine forces to help try and save the Lego Universe.

But sadly, despite there being pockets of humour, nods to various Lego franchises (like Jurassic World etc) and an addictively annoying new song called ‘This song is gonna get stuck inside your head’ – sadly the movie won’t stick inside your head for very long.

Which leaves this being more than serviceable to satisfy most kids (particularly the over eights) for a couple of hours over half-term – but after the innovative first film it disappointingly doesn’t build on that.

More of the same here is simply not a good thing – with ‘underwhelming’ sadly replacing ‘awesome’ as this sequel’s theme.
