Let the Oscar battle begin . . .
It’s a wonderful time of the year for movie buffs. Superbly made films with A-list casts are being released left, right and centre – all hoping for Oscar glory.
Steve Jobs is a flick I predict will be up for Best Picture, with Michael Fassbender (X-Men: Days of Future Past and Prometheus) likely to be in the running for Best Actor – and also boasts the likes of Kate Winslet and Jeff Daniels to add that star quality.
Fassbender plays the title character and Apple legend, who sadly passed away in 2011. The film mainly focuses on the drama taking place backstage at three iconic product launches – starting in 1984 with the unveiling of the first Macintosh and ending in 1998 with the iMac.
We’re given a behind the scenes look at the manic life of Steve Jobs – including the issues related to his ex-girlfriend Chrisann Brennan and their young daughter Lisa. We also get a feel for the computer genius’ life after being fired from Apple – before returning ten years later.
Many that knew Steve Jobs insist that the man we see on the screen does not represent the legend accurately. I’m not sure exactly how much truth has been put into this film, but I’m not particularly sure that I care. This was an entertaining movie, brilliantly filmed and well worth the watch – and for me personally, that is what’s important.
What stops Steve Jobs being a masterpiece though, is the sloppy editing during some flashback scenes, and by the third act – things do start to get a touch repetitive.
But with British Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire) guiding a sharp script – and Fassbender shining with an amazing performance – this is just the job.
