According to Twitter (so it must be true), many people have witnessed others walking out of their screening of Macbeth.

In this adaptation of Shakespeare’s famous Scottish play, Michael Fassbender plays Macbeth, the increasingly troubled and murderous king – alongside Marion Cotillard as his devious and scheming wife.

Starting out subservient to King Duncan (David Thewlis), Lady Macbeth urges her husband to kill the king and seize the throne. He does so, but soon becomes consumed with guilt and paranoia as the ruler of Scotland.

Fassbender gives a brilliantly haunting performance and is utterly convincing as the battle-weary warrior. In fact, every character shines throughout the duration of this movie. Not one person feels out of place in what can’t have been an easy performance for anyone involved.

With the cast on top form, alongside stunning cinematography, this is one to watch.

So, why the reported walkouts? I can see how Macbeth is not going to appeal to everyone. Even with the running time being less than half the duration of the play, this film moves at a snail’s pace.

People looking for a Hollywood-esque adaptation of Shakespeare (DiCaprio’s Romeo and Juliet, anyone?) will not find it here – but for true grit and determination Macbeth kills it.
