Here’s the comedy that’s been branded by various critics as both the “best” and “worst” comedy of 2014. What’s our verdict?
The follow-up to the 2011 film Horrible Bosses has seriously split the room. Horrible Bosses 2 is just as good as its predecessor. If your response to that is, “Well, it couldn’t be any worse” then this is not the movie for you. If you enjoyed the first, then you’ll get a kick out of this flick – it’s as simple as that.
This sequel reunites Nick (Jason Bateman), Kurt (Jason Sudeikis)and Dale (Charlie Day)– who are now their own bosses. They’re the proud owners of a product called ‘The Shower Buddy’, which catches the attention of a successful businessman named Bert Hanson (Christoph Waltz) who places a generous order for their product. The trio quickly move into manufacturing, and a lot of work and 500,000 dollars later, are told by Bert that he no longer wants the order he made. Desperate and angry, they decide to seek revenge on the billionaire. But things don’t quite go as planned.
Fans of the first film will be pleased to hear that their scheme sees them team up with familiar faces, such as their criminal adviser (Jamie Foxx), Nick’s former boss (Kevin Spacey) and the sex addict (Jennifer Aniston).
Horrible Bosses 2 is at its best when the supporting cast make an appearance. It’s a shame they weren’t used more – particularly Jamie Foxx, who steals the show in the few scenes he’s in.
My biggest criticism is that the filmmakers have played it too safe. The jokes and structure are almost identical to its predecessor – so much so, the two films are starting to blend together.
Unfortunately this is not the best comedy of the year. With its A-List cast and promising predecessor, it could have been! But… it’s certainly not the worst comedy either. There are enough laughs here to make it worth the cost of your ticket.
