Isabelle Huppert triumphs in this B-Movie horror!
Greta tells the story of Frances (Chloë Grace Moretz) who moves to New York City after the death of her mother. Being the kind-hearted person she is, Frances returns a handbag that had been left on the subway – belonging to a lady named Greta Hideg (Isabelle Huppert). The two of them soon become good friends.
However, it’s not long before Frances makes the alarming discovery of numerous bags like the one she had found hidden in a cupboard – each with the names of those that had found them. This is more than enough for Frances to make her sever ties, but Greta isn’t going to let that happen so easily.
The on-screen chemistry between Chloë Grace Moretz and Isabelle Huppert is engaging enough but it is Huppert that steals the show as the stalker. She clearly had a great time playing the villain and during certain scenes she really gets under your skin.
And speaking of stalkers, if you walk into the screening expecting a modern twist on the likes of Misery or Cape Fear, you will leave very disappointed. The Interview with the Vampire director, Neil Jordan, has clearly taken inspiration from said films, but sadly they did it much better.
The only moment that felt truly original saw a unique twist on a dream sequence. This gave me a glimpse of how unique Greta could’ve been.
Overall, if I were to judge this on its own merits and stop comparing it to similar movies, this is just about worth the ticket price – but pretty much due to Isabelle Huppert’s performance alone.
