For a perfectly serviceable slice of shark-infested action – this tense drama has more bite than you’d probably expect.
It stars Mexico-holidaying sisters Lisa (Mandy Moore – songstress/actress and voice of Tangled’s Rapunzel ) and Kate (The Vampire Diaries’ Claire Holt), who get trapped in a shark cage at the bottom of the ocean after it snaps away from the boat of Matthew Modine’s – veteran of such films as Full Metal Jacket, Any Given Sunday, Memphis Belle and The Dark Knight Rises – Captain Taylor.
Short on oxygen, and out of radio-range, they have to work together to find a way to the top of the deep blue sea – with 20-foot bloodthirsty great white sharks circling.
And while the movie generally has a B-movie feel (and cast) – with blatantly stereotypical sibling woes shoe-horned in – the shark effects are more realistic than some films with a generally noticeable fear of dread.
But despite a twist that doesn’t quite work, there are some viscerally tense moments that just about give this enough teeth to leave this swimming in watchable popcorn-munching waters – even though it’s a grade below last year’s Blake Lively-headlining The Shallows.
