ESP’s Posh columnist Phil Adlam is back with more news from behind the scenes at Peterborough United…
2021; they said it would be better right? It does seem like we are in a never ending cycle, but we have to remain as positive as we can, both as individuals and collectively and help each other through what is an extremely challenging time.
From a personal point of view, I have been fortunate that I have been able to work the very different match days and pre-match press conferences, which are held virtually via Zoom. I am not too sure that many people were aware of the platform before the pandemic, but nowadays, we can’t live without it.
We conduct all of our pre-match and post-match interviews on Zoom. It can be a slightly strange experience and if anything, it has taught us that good Wi-Fi is a necessity, but thankfully there have not been any cringe moments so far!
Elite sport has been permitted to carry on and from a selfish point of view, quite right too. I think it is helping the nation in some way or another. Football without fans is not the same, but not allowing supporters to follow their side even from afar would have been a travesty.
Match days are different, but when the game gets underway, it is still about fighting for those three points and at Peterborough United we are in a good position to have an eventful end to the Sky Bet League One campaign. We currently sit in the automatic promotion places with 19 games to go, but this league is tough, anyone can beat anyone as the recent results have showed.
Whilst the pandemic has proved incredibly challenging for everyone connected with the club, it has not been the only challenge. A burst water main pipe at the stadium has meant the surface is really struggling and a lot of work has gone on behind the scenes to even get us to a point where games can be held at the Weston Homes Stadium.
Speaking of the stadium, it is great that despite all of the global challenges, we are now in a position to confirm that the purchase of London Road should go through on 31st March. A lot of work has gone into this behind the scenes and that work should be commended.
I think if this pandemic has taught us one valuable lesson, it is to not take friends and family for granted and hopefully the football club can provide a place for those families to come together when it is safe to do so.
