It is so good to see Peterborough’s New Theatre hitting the ground running under the new management of Selladoor Venues.
I was one of a lively audience at the busy opening night of the hit musical, Avenue Q at the venue on Broadway.
I was fortunate enough to see this hilarious show during its five years in the West End. I wondered if the quality would differ to the spectacle I witnessed in our capital!
Being the winner of the TONY Triple Crown for Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book, I knew show was going to be good – but not quite this good!
It tells the story of a recent college graduate named Princeton, who moves into a shabby New York apartment all the way out on Avenue Q. There, he meets Kate (the girl next door), Rod (the Republican), Trekkie (the internet sexpert), Lucy The… erm… Slut and other colourful types who help Princeton finally discover his true purpose in life!
Most characters in the show are puppets, but do not be fooled – this IS NOT for kids! With Avenue Q being created by Jeff Marx and Robert Lopez (Co-creator of BOOK OF MORMON) it’s probably no surprise to hear it is controversial – hence only being suitable for audiences 14+.
The 11 strong cast put in an energetic, non-stop performance, with several cast members performing 2 or more puppet characters. These puppeteers did such a phenomenal job that before long, you forget they’re even there – all you see are these creatures brought to life. Their voices were also phenomenal, singing songs you won’t get out of your head for quite a while. I’ve been belting out one particular song about the internet for the last two hours.
This truly is a musical like no other. With just a handful of seats left during the next few days, I highly recommend you book your tickets now.
So, how does the quality of the touring show compare to the one I saw at the West End? There is honestly no difference – it is just as good.
With the Peterborough New Theatre booking such quality shows this soon after reopening, I can’t wait to see what the future holds for this stunning venue.
