Monark takes place in Shin Mikado Academy, which is surrounded by a mysterious barrier and a nasty mist that drives people mad. The protagonist gets transported to the Otherworld and forms a pact with a powerful daemon named Vanitas, who is a Monark and the Authority of Vanity. After returning to the real world, the school’s dean asks the protagonist to defeat the various Pactbearers lurking around the academy in order to lift the barrier.
Monark’s themes of creating a strong Ego to deal with daemons aren’t only present on a narrative level. In fact, at the very start, you will answer a series of questions which will be used to set your levels in each one of the Seven Deadly Sins. This will determine which daemon you will be able to summon at the beginning, and will be further increased along the campaign, with new daemons added to your party over time. This is an interesting system that may result in an easier or harder early game. Each Sin is connected to a type of unity, so you may start the game with a healer, for example. This can help you a lot at the start, but there’s a chance for you to get a character focused on buffing, or even a character that deals heavy damage to enemies affected by status conditions.
Exploring the dungeons is a pretty limited activity in Monark. Most levels will feature just a few classrooms and some simple puzzles. The puzzles usually involve reading all the notes lying around; Then, either giving the correct answer to some guy who doesn’t want to let us progress; Or finding the code to open a locker. As we explore the mist-infested halls, our “MAD” meter will slowly go up. Once it reaches 100% we are back to the infirmary. As if running short on time isn’t bad enough, sometimes a “death call” will reach our cellphone. Once this happens, it’s game over – just like that. However, we can prevent it by fighting in certain battles, and, indeed, combat is the main dish in this game. For the most part, it does work quite well.
The atmosphere in the mist-filled hallways feels compellingly creepy at first, but soon grows bland — all the hallways more or less look the same. If you stay in the mist too long, you begin to go mad and you’ll end up in the nurse’s office. However, there aren’t any consequences other than having to retrace your steps, with the result that this mist-induced madness feels like a missed opportunity to spike tension.
As enjoyable as that combat system is, Monark doesn’t make the best use of it when you consider the very limited enemy rooster. At hour 40, you will be fighting the same enemies you encountered at the beginning. They will just have fancier armour and a few new tricks. The game’s evolution system is also interesting, but problematic. Instead of a standard experience bar, you will get a currency named Spirit, which can be used both as a means to buy new items and equipment, and as a way to unlock new skills. Each ability unlocked also boosts your character by one level, increasing their overall statuses. The problem lies in how new characters always start at level one. As a consequence, getting a new character at the mid-game segment leads to a very annoying grind-fest—unless you have purposely saved some Spirit, at the cost of not evolving your team.
Overall, Monark does its bit at trying to do something different from most other JRPGs. It actually succeeds at that task, at least partially. Perhaps it even tries too hard with its story and gameplay mechanics, without offering enough incentive to see the story through to its end. Repetition soon sets in: Roaming the same halls, solving simple puzzles, and then being plunged into difficult fights. Still, with relatively interesting mechanics and a serviceable plot, Monark will indeed satisfy the fans of the genre.
